News - If you hadn't heard already, Gainax has officially shuttered with it's latest announcement of bankruptcy. If you're wondering how Gainax got this way, The Mary Sue has a basic breakdown on the history of poor financial choices.

But, as the article also says, it's not entirely a bad situation:

"While Gainax’s bankruptcy and shuttering is sad from the perspective of anime history, one could easily argue it’s good news for creators in the modern day. Ano and Studio Khara are overseeing the transfer of Gainax’s many assets, making sure that every IP goes back into the hands of their rightful owners. As per Khara’s statement, they’re also working to “resolve unpaid payments to studios, writers, and creators within the animation industry.” "

There's a sort of Wes Anderson-y energy to Hideaki Anno's live action movies. Something about the mix of retro nostalgic vibes with sorta blunt documentary-style cinematography.

i am Very behind on my gainax knowledge why is it a good thing it’s going bankrupt. i’m curious what’s goin on with the studio

oh god, there is so much lmao. ironically not much has gone on anime-wise since 2010 (nothing of note has been produced there since panty and stocking with garterbelt), but they sure have been VERY busy doing some legally/ethically/financially-dubious business since then (and since their inception fbdnfnjdjs)

tbh the best summary that exists of all of gainax’s shitty ways is actually a post that hideaki anno made a few years back. the context for this post is that the then-president of gainax was arrested in late 2019 for assault (content warning if you decide to look into that further, it’s gross) and a bunch of the outlets that reported on it said something to the effect of “president of the evangelion studio arrested!” which of course made people think it was ANNO who got arrested, and he felt like he needed to clear his own name/studio khara’s name. honestly reading through everything he says is so damning and he put up with so much shit that i’m surprised he held it in as long as he did, fjfjjdjdn.

khara has also made another post about it, i haven’t had the chance to read through it myself yet but it seems like they will be redistributing the rights to all of gainax’s properties that haven’t yet escaped the studio’s clutches to their creators. so it’s a win in the sense that this terribly-run, money-hungry studio has finally got its comeuppance and hopefully the people who made great anime there get to finally own their own work!!!! also this happened so close to shinji’s birthday (6/6) that i am choosing to believe the universe cosmically aligned for the little dude for once in his life. happy birthday shinji :]

Anno’s first post Shin series movie will see him return to animation with Studio Khara doing a film adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato.

As good as 2199 was, I am here to see Anno cook, especially given how interesting the Shin films were. (Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, and Shin Kamen Rider).
